Vintage versus Antiques

Hi, everyone, and welcome to Facets of the Past!

I became interested in vintage and antiques when I started lurking in our neighborhood antique mall. I found a few things to buy (especially for friends/family on their birthdays!), but I really wasn’t collecting. Yet. My favorite activity for a few years was to wander the mall and wonder: Who owned this and what happened to them? Who were they? Why did they sell/give away this particular item? How was it made? Who designed it?

Okay, so that’s probably my insatiable curiosity at work. Luckily, my son Steve shares my love of old things–we spent two straight days at the mall, checking everything out on one of his visits from the east coast.

Boredom pushed me to peruse yard sales and thrift stores. Oh, how the bug bit, HARD!  I purchased a few things and spent an inordinate amount of time on my second favorite task: researching. Not intimidated by the sheer amount of information online and at my local libraries (well, maybe a little), I took a deep breath and dove in. And I realized how little I knew about vintage items and antiques. I’m a virtual baby when it comes to comparing my knowledge to others who take the dealer life very seriously.

So, I invite you to join me in my quest–not only in the absolute pleasure of finding a treasure, but also in understanding the creation of the piece and ultimately the perfect home for each one.
